How does it work?

Whether you buy a car "on the WEB", or from a dealer's lot--you will end up buying from a dealer!

The people at the other end of the WEB will refer your enquiry to a dealer.  There are a few reasons you may end up with a better price.

bulletVendors realize that buying/selling over the internet is very much based on the sticker price.  If it isn't a great price you aren't going to buy!

bulletThe dealer may not be from Grande Prairie, and dealers are always eager to sell outside of their usual catchment area.

bulletBuying/selling over the WEB is new, with the vendors eager to gain experience in what promises to be a low-overhead and profitable marketing strategy.

In reality

You still need your local dealer.

bulletYou'll want to see the new vehicles, sit in them, and probably take a few test drives before settling on the model you want to buy.

bulletAfter the sale you will need maintenance and  warranty--and certainly won't be driving to another city for routine work!

In all fairness, local dealers are providing you with a real service both before and after the sale--so they'll earn your business.

Currently (October 1999), only 2% of cars are "bought" over the Internet (from a Net-generated lead).  However, 40% of new car buyers research and shop over the Internet!  These percentages are said to be rising quickly!

Finally the local dealers don't want to lose sales--so they will do their best to be competitive.

Bottom Line

The internet is great for research--but don't buy an out-of-town car to save a $1,000!
